Approach Aid
In the 1960s Northholt Airport was frequently mistaken for Heathrow. To make
matters more confusing, each airport had a nearby gasometer. One 707 landed on
Northholt's tiny runway in error, and could not take off again. Ever since,
Heathrow's gasometer has been painted with the giant letters LHR (London
Heathrow) and an arrow pointing in the right direction.
